The simple ways to save energy

There are many ways to save energy. As fuel prices continue to rise, so our energy bills become harder to pay. Of course, you want to reduce your bills and save energy too. The many different ways to save energy are not limited and they are simple to use. Some of the many ways to save energy are as follows:
• Turn your thermostat down. Reducing your room temperature by 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10 percent and saves a good amount of money per year. If you have a programmer, set your heating and hot water to come on only when required rather than all the time
• Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows and check for draughts around windows and doors
• Always turn off the lights when you leave a room. This is one of the simplest ways to save energy which an individual can follow
• Don't leave appliances on standby and remember not to leave laptops and mobile phones on charge unnecessarily
• If possible, fill up the washing machine, tumble dryer or dishwasher: one full load uses less energy than two half loads
• Only boil as much water as you need (but remember to cover the elements if you're using an electric kettle)
• A dripping hot water tap wastes energy and in one week wastes enough hot water to fill half a bath, so fix leaking taps and make sure they're fully turned off!

Another very effective and increasing ways to save energy is the use of energy saving light bulbs. They last up to 10 times longer than ordinary bulbs, and using one can save you around say £45 for example over the lifetime of the bulb. This saving could be around £70 over its lifetime if you're replacing a high wattage incandescent bulb, or one used for more than a few hours a day.

Changing your old filament light bulbs for energy saving light bulbs or compact fluorescent light bulbs as they're also known is something everybody should do as one of the great ways to save energy. The prices of energy efficient light bulbs has dropped dramatically in recent years and they are now as cheap as the old bulbs used to be, so there really can be no excuse for changing over.

Some of the most effective ways to save energy at home are either free or cheap to apply and have an immediate impact on energy bills. The hardest part is becoming more aware of energy habits. Once you understand your energy usage pattern, it becomes easier to apply the ways to save energy. Until recently, many people take cheap energy for granted and expect a never ending supply on demand. With this attitude, ways to save energy are not applicable.
